Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a condition in which your body is unable to get sufficient oxygen at high altitudes (above 2,500 meters).
This is one of the most common problems faced by tourists in Ladakh or any other high-altitude region.
AMS Symptoms
It is important to know the symptoms to save your trip and your health:
- Headache
- Nausea/Vomiting
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Shortness of Breath
- Loss of Appetite
- Sleeping Difficulty
If ignored, this can become serious.
Why AMS Happens
At high altitude:
- Oxygen is scarce
- Air pressure is low
- Body needs time to adjust
If you go to high altitude quickly, this can happen
AMS Prevention Tips
This is one of the most important parts of this AMS guide:
1. Acclimatization
Stay for 1-2 days in mid-altitude (Leh)
2. Stay Hydrated
Drink 3-4 litres of water daily
3. Avoid Alcohol/Smoking
At least for the first 2-3 days
4. Eat Light
Avoid heavy or oily food
5. Ascend Slowly
Avoid rushing to high altitude
AMS Medicines
- Diamox (Acetazolamide)
- Paracetamol (for headache)
- Oxygen support (if required)
Always consult a doctor before taking medicines.
When to Descend Immediately
- Severe headache
- Breathlessness at rest
- Confusion
- Continuous vomiting
Golden rule: Descend immediately if there are signs of deterioration of health
